Birth is messy. That first became clear to me during clinical rotations on the labor and delivery unit in Lower Manhattan. It became clearer still during my years of training in the jungle, where I felt immediately at home inside the container of ceremony – it was a spiritual ICU, OR, and L&D unit all at once.

Since I was a girl, I have been the one people come to with the things they have not said out loud. That was true long before I had any credentials for it. Nothing you bring will be too much.

Rebirth can be even messier. Ask anyone who has been remade by a life-altering event. And the truth is that every event is altering – the choice is whether you walk it consciously, which is its own exercise of wisdom.
